The Weather

Talking about the weather is the great British passtime, and there's no reason you can't do it with Greek too. It's a useful way to start practising tenses other than just the present as you always need to be able to moan about yesterday's weather or enquire about tomorrow's. Here's the basic vocabulary for the various types of weather:

English Lowercase Uppercase
the sun ο ήλιος Ο ΗΛΙΟΣ
the cloud το σύννεφο ΤΟ ΣΥΝΝΕΦΟ
the rain η βροχή Η ΒΡΟΧΗ
the snow το χιόνι ΤΟ ΧΙΟΝΙ
the wind ο άνεμος / ο αέρας Ο ΑΝΕΜΟΣ / Ο ΑΕΡΑΣ
the wind storm η θύελλα Η ΘΥΕΛΛΑ
the rain storm / downpour η καταιγίδα Η ΚΑΤΑΙΓΙΔΑ
the lightning η αστραπή Η ΑΣΤΡΑΠΗ
the fog η ομίχλη Η ΟΜΙΧΛΗ
the rainbow το ουράνιο τόξο ΤΟ ΟΥΡΑΝΙΟ ΤΟΞΟ
the ice ο πάγος Ο ΠΑΓΟΣ
it rains/it is raining βρέχει ΒΡΕΧΕΙ
it snows/it is snowing χιονίζει ΧΙΟΝΙΖΕΙ
it is cold [or use lit: it does cold] εχει / κάνει κρύο ΕΧΕΙ / ΚΑΝΕΙ ΚΡΥΟ
it is hot [or use lit: it does hot] εχει / κάνει ζέστη ΕΧΕΙ / ΚΑΝΕΙ ΖΕΣΤΗ
it is windy [lit: it blows] φυσάει ΦΥΣΑΕΙ
the sun shines [lit: the sun burns] ο ήλιος λάμπει Ο ΗΛΙΟΣ ΛΑΜΠΕΙ
the weather is good ο καιρός είναι καλός Ο ΚΑΙΡΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΛΟΣ
the weather is bad ο καιρός είναι άσχημος Ο ΚΑΙΡΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΣΧΗΜΟΣ

So, what's the weather like? Well, their are various ways you could ask this. Take a look at the following (literally translated) phrases in the present tense:

English Lowercase Uppercase
How is the weather? πος είναι ο καιρός; ΠΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ Ο ΚΑΙΡΟΣ;
What does the weather do? τι καιρό κάνει; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΚΑΝΕΙ;
What weather do you have? τι καιρό έχετε; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΕΧΕΤΕ;

Or similarly the same phrases in the past tense:

English Lowercase Uppercase
How was the weather? πος ήταν ο καιρός; ΠΟΣ ΗΤΑΝ Ο ΚΑΙΡΟΣ;
What did the weather do? τι καιρό έκανε ; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΕΚΑΝΕ;
What weather did you have? τι καιρό είχατε; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΕΙΧΑΤΕ;

Or even in the future tense:

English Lowercase Uppercase
How will the weather be? πος θα είναι ο καιρός; ΠΟΣ ΘΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ Ο ΚΑΙΡΟΣ;
What will the weather do? τι καιρό θα κάνει ; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΘΑ ΚΑΝΕΙ;
What weather will you have? τι καιρό θα έχετε; ΤΙ ΚΑΙΡΟ ΘΑ ΕΧΕΤΕ

Taking this a little futher lets look at a few different tenses for raining, snowing and shining. You could be talking about yesterday's rain saying that in English that "it rained yesterday", but meaning either that it rained at some point during yesterday or that it rained all day yesterday. In Greek this is the difference between using the simple past tense or the continuous past tense. If we look at the verbs for to rain, snow, and shine, lets check both the simple and continuous tenses for the third person (he/she and specifically in this case, it):

English Present Simple Past Continuous Past

So, for instance, if asked what the weather was like yesterday you could reply χθές έβρεχε/ΧΘΕΣ ΕΒΡΕΧΕ if it were raining all day but if you wanted to say "it was sunny, but rained a little in the afternoon" then you could say:

χθές, ο ήλιος έλαμπε, αλα στο μεσημέρι έβρεξε λιγό / ΧΘΕΣ, Ο ΗΛΙΟΣ ΕΛΑΜΠΕ, ΑΛΑ ΣΤΟ ΜΕΣΗΜΕΡΙ ΕΒΡΕΞΕ ΛΙΓΟ

Notice the continuous use of to shine (έλαμπε / ΕΛΑΜΠΕ) and the simple past use of to rain (έβρεξε / ΕΒΡΕΞΕ)

Let's add a bit more vocabulary around the subject:

English Lowercase Uppercase
nice [day] λιακάδα ΛΙΑΚΑΔΑ
hot [day] καύσωνας ΚΑΥΣΩΝΑΣ
wet (of an object, not generally)1 υγρό ΥΓΡΟ
degrees βαθμούς ΒΑΘΜΟΥΣ
temperature θερμοκρασιά ΘΕΡΜΟΚΡΑΣΙΑ

And so here are a few more phrases that use all this:

English Lowercase Uppercase
we had a lot of nice [days] είχαμε πολύ λιακάδες ΕΙΧΑΜΕ ΠΟΛΥ ΛΙΑΚΑΔΕΣ
tomorrow we will have a hot [day] άβριο θα έχουμε καύσωνα ΑΒΡΙΟ ΘΑ ΕΧΟΥΜΕ ΚΑΥΣΩΝΑ
we have a strong wind today η σήμερα έχουμε ο δυνατός αέρας Η ΣΗΜΕΡΑ ΕΧΟΥΜΕ Ο ΔΥΝΑΤΟΣ ΑΕΡΑΣ
do you know the weather forecast for tomorrow? χέρετε η προγνώση του καιρού για άβριο; ΧΕΡΕΤΕ Η ΠΡΟΓΝΩΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΙΡΟΥ ΓΙΑ ΑΒΡΙΟ;
today is very close η σήμερα ειναι πολύ κουφόβραση Η ΣΗΜΕΡΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΠΟΛΥ ΚΟΥΦΟΒΡΑΣΗ

how hot is it? [lit: what temperature do you have?] τι θερμοκρασιά2 έχετε; ΤΙ ΘΕΡΜΟΚΡΑΣΙΑ ΕΧΕΤΕ;
how hot was it? [lit: how hot did it do?] πος ο ζέστει2 έκανε ΠΟΣ Ο ΖΕΣΤΕΙ ΕΚΑΝΕ
I like the hot weather μ'αρέσει το ζέστος καίρος Μ'ΑΡΕΣΕΙ ΤΟ ΖΕΣΤΟΣ ΚΑΙΡΟΣ
we don't like the rain δεν μασ αρέσει η βροχή ΔΕΝ ΜΑΣ ΑΡΕΣΕΙ Η ΒΡΟΧΗ
  1. This can be used to describe the roads being wet because it is raining as opposed to the weather itself being wet. For that you are more likely to use the word above in the table and say εξό, είναι υγρασία/ΕΞΟ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΥΓΡΑΣΙΑ to mean "it's wet outside"
  2. Don't use these words for temperature or hot to mean you a running a temperature in health terms. The phrase έχω πυρετό/ΕΧΩ ΠΥΡΕΤΟ is used for this which literally means "I have fever"
